Safe Water for Rehoming Swans |
The Swan Sanctuary is constantly on the look out for safe havens where disabled swans can be rehomed to live out the rest of their days in peace. Whenever possible the swans that come to the sanctuary are returned to their mates, families or flocks but, when a permanent injury such as the loss of flight has occurred, this is simply not possible due to the threat of attack from foxes, dogs etc.
If you are interested in fostering some disabled swans and have use of a private lake that is at least 1 acre in size with an island, preferably without public access (due to the threat from dogs), then please send us a photograph of the lake, your full postcode (so that we can find an aerial photo on the internet) and whatever other details you have. If the lake appears suitable we would then come and visit you to discuss matters further. Unfortunately we cannot place swans further than 50 miles away from us as we don't feel it's fair to the swans to be transported over longer distances than this and prefer to be within easy reach of the swans should there ever be a problem requiring our rapid presence.
Should your lake be suitable for rehoming swans then you would be obliged to sign an agreement confirming your acceptance of the following conditions:
1. To feed the swans twice-daily on a diet of
mixed grain and bread. All bread must be free from mould.
2. To take all reasonable steps to provide a secure environment against accidents
and natural predators.
3. The Swan Sanctuary would retain the right to inspect the swan(s) at any time
and remove them if necessary. Notification of an inspection would be agreed
in advance.
4. The Swan Sanctuary must have authority to enter the premises at any time,
should the need arise.
5. Should any swan appear ill, injured or in any form of distress, The Swan
Sanctuary would have to be notified immediately.
6. In the event of the ownership of the property and the lake changing, the
new owners/tenants would have to be made aware of the responsibilities and a
new agreement signed.
7. Any swan supplied would remain Crown property and the responsibility of The
Swan Sanctuary.
8. Neither the swans supplied, nor any of their descendants could be sold.
Many Thanks!
